365 Silver Screams
The One-a-Day Horror Movie Guide

By Bryan Senn

365 Silver Screams is the first book to tie popular horror and science fiction movies to specific calendar dates, presenting a novel hook to the reader by creating a Calendar of Horrors. Some of the ties are thematic, such as January 4 - Braille Day - for Dark Eyes of London (a film centering on a home for the blind) or the first observance of Mothers Day for Gorgo (a movie about a mother dinosaur rescuing her offspring from greedy showmen). The links are also historic, such as the date of Richard III's death for Tower of London (1962); holiday oriented, such as Halloween for Halloween (1978); or participant specific, such as Edgar Allan Poe's birthday for The Black Cat (1934). Humor or irony also plays an important part in linking a particular film to a certain date, such as placing The Devil Doll (1936) on the date the Barbie Doll debuted in 1959, or linking Sweeny Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936) to the date the first electric razor was marketed.

Along with a brief synopsis, each essay features an often-hilarious promotion blurb used to advertise the film, critical analysis, production information, background on principal cast and/or crew, and direct quotes from participants on the making of the movie.

Bryan Senn is the author of Drums of Terror: Voodoo in the Cinema (1998), Golden Horrors - An Illustrated Critical Filmography of Terror Cinema, 1931-1939 (1996) and Fantastic Cinema Subject Guide - A Topical Index to 2500 Horror, Si-Fi, and Fantasy Films (1992).
